Try these first — most WiFi issues are solved by step 3:
- Restart your router — unplug it for 30 seconds, plug it back in, wait 2 minutes
- Forget and reconnect — go to Controls > WiFi, tap your network, select Forget, then reconnect with your password
- Reboot the car — hold both scroll wheels on the steering wheel for 10 seconds until the screen goes black
- Check your WiFi band — pre-2021 Teslas only support 2.4GHz, not 5GHz (more on this below)
- Move closer to the router — park as close as possible, even temporarily, to rule out signal strength

- Too many devices on the router — Consumer routers struggle with 30+ connected devices. Your Tesla might get deprioritized.
- MAC address filtering — If your router only allows specific devices, you'll need to add your Tesla's MAC address (find it in Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information).
- Captive portal networks — Hotel, airport, and public WiFi that requires a browser login page won't work. Tesla's browser can't handle most captive portals reliably.
- Software glitch — Sometimes the WiFi module just needs a reboot. This is more common than you'd think.
2.4GHz vs 5GHz: 2021+ Model 3, Y, S, and X support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi. Older models only support 2.4GHz. If you're unsure, set your router to broadcast both bands with separate network names (e.g., "HomeWiFi" for 5GHz and "HomeWiFi_2G" for 2.4GHz) and connect your Tesla to the 2.4GHz one.
Step-by-Step: Reconnect Tesla to WiFi
- Sit in the driver's seat and wake the touchscreen
- Tap Controls (car icon at the bottom left)

How to Reboot Your Tesla
Rebooting fixes roughly half of all Tesla WiFi issues. There are three levels:
Soft Reboot (Try This First)
Hold both scroll wheels on the steering wheel for about 10 seconds. The touchscreen will go black and the Tesla logo will appear. Wait 1-2 minutes for it to fully restart. Your car stays on — the HVAC, locks, and drive systems are unaffected.
Hard Reboot

Full Power Off
Go to Controls > Safety > Power Off. Don't touch anything — no pedals, no doors, no screen — for at least 2 minutes. The car fully shuts down and restarts when you open the door or press the brake.

Go to Controls > Software and look for the update preference setting. Advanced gets updates sooner. Standard waits for wider rollout. Switch to Advanced if you want updates faster.
How Tesla Updates Actually Work
- Updates download only over WiFi — cellular/LTE won't work for this
- Files are typically 1-5 GB and can take 30 minutes to several hours depending on your connection speed
- Your car needs to be parked and connected to WiFi for the entire download
- Tesla pushes updates in waves — not every car gets the same update at the same time
Update Available but Not Downloading?
- Make sure WiFi shows Connected (not just the icon)
- Leave the car parked and on WiFi for at least 2-3 hours — downloads often happen overnight
- Check that you have enough battery — Tesla won't download updates below ~20% charge on some versions
- Open the Tesla app and check Software — sometimes tapping "Update" from the app triggers the download

This is probably the most common real-world WiFi problem. Your router is inside the house, your car is in the garage, and there's a wall (or two) in between.
Solutions, from cheapest to best:
- Move the router closer — even temporarily placing it near the garage wall helps
- WiFi range extender — a $25-40 plug-in extender in the room closest to the garage works well for most people
- Powerline adapter with WiFi — uses your home's electrical wiring to extend the network to an outlet in the garage
- Mesh WiFi system — place a mesh node in the garage for a dedicated, strong signal (best long-term solution)
- Park closer temporarily — if you just need to download one update, park in the driveway near the house
Budget pick: A simple WiFi range extender plugged into an outlet near your garage is usually enough to solve the problem. You don't need a $300 mesh system just for Tesla updates.
Tesla Wall Connector WiFi Issues
The Tesla Wall Connector (Gen 3) has its own WiFi connection — separate from your car's WiFi. This is used for energy monitoring, load sharing, and smart charging features through the Tesla app.
If your Wall Connector won't connect to WiFi:
- Open the Tesla app > Charging > Manage Wall Connector
- Make sure the Wall Connector is on a 2.4GHz network (it does not support 5GHz)
- The Wall Connector must be within range of your router — it's a fixed install, so you may need a range extender
- Commission the Wall Connector through the Tesla app if it was recently installed — WiFi setup happens during commissioning
- Power cycle the Wall Connector by flipping the breaker off for 30 seconds
Don't confuse car WiFi with Wall Connector WiFi. Your car connects to your home WiFi to download updates. The Wall Connector connects to your home WiFi for smart features. They're completely independent systems.
When to Contact Tesla Service
Most WiFi problems are software or environment issues. But if both WiFi and LTE/cellular stop working at the same time, that points to a hardware failure — usually the connectivity module or MCU.
Schedule a service appointment if:
- WiFi and LTE are both dead simultaneously
- The touchscreen shows no connectivity icons at all
- WiFi worked fine before and now no networks appear after rebooting
- You've tried every step above and nothing works
- Your car hasn't received an update in 6+ months despite regular WiFi connection
