Tesla Heated Steering Wheel Not Working? How to Fix It

You hop in your Tesla on a freezing morning, tap the heated steering wheel icon, and… nothing. The wheel stays cold. It's a surprisingly common complaint, especially during winter months, and the fix is usually simpler than you'd expect.

This guide walks through every cause β€” from a quick software reset to replacing the heating element itself.

Which Teslas Have a Heated Steering Wheel?

Not every Tesla came with one, so let's clear this up first:

How to Turn On the Heated Steering Wheel

Fix 1: Software Reset (Try This First)

Fix 3: Check the Fuse

Tesla uses a fuse to protect the steering wheel heater circuit. If this fuse has blown, the heating element gets no power.

Model 3 & Model Y

The relevant fuse is in the left-hand panel fuse box (driver's side footwell):

  1. Open the driver's door
  2. Remove the lower panel below the dashboard (pulls off with gentle force)
  3. Locate the fuse panel
  4. Find the fuse labeled for steering column / steering wheel heater (consult your owner's manual for the exact position β€” it varies by model year)

Model S & Model X

Tesla Service Center: This is the recommended route for heating element replacement. The steering wheel typically needs to be replaced as a unit since the element is integrated into the wheel covering. Cost is typically €300–600 depending on model and region.

Third-party steering wheel: Some aftermarket heated steering wheels are available for Tesla. Quality varies β€” stick to reputable suppliers and verify compatibility with your specific model year.

DIY element retrofit: Some owners have successfully added aftermarket heating pads under the steering wheel cover, but this requires leather work and isn't recommended for beginners.

When to Visit Tesla Service
