Tesla Charging Port Replacement: Full Guide
If your Tesla's charging port has failed completely β not just a stuck latch, but actual electrical failure, burned pins, or physical damage β you'll need a full charge port assembly replacement. This is different from the common stuck charge port fix, which is usually a latch actuator issue.
When You Need a Full Replacement (vs. Just Fixing a Stuck Port)
| Symptom | Likely Fix |
|---|---|
| Charge port won't unlatch | Stuck port fix β latch actuator |
| Charge port door won't open/close | Door actuator replacement |
| "Unable to charge" with no error detail | Full port assembly |
| Burned or melted charging pins | Full port assembly |
| Physical damage to the port | Full port assembly |
| Intermittent charging failures | Check connector first, then full port |
| Reduced charging speed (all chargers) | See slow charging guide first |
What You'll Need
Time Required: 2β3 hours Skill Level: Advanced (involves high-voltage components)
Parts:
- Tesla charging port assembly (~$200β400) β includes the port, pins, and connector housing
- Charge port door actuator (~$30β50) β replace while you're in there if it's sluggish
- New cable release bracket (~$10) β often breaks during removal
Cost Comparison
| Option | Parts | Labor | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tesla Service Center | $300β500 | $300β500 | $600β1,000 |
| Independent Shop | $250β400 | $200β300 | $450β700 |
| DIY | $200β400 | Your time | $200β400 |
Your savings: $250β600
Step-by-Step Charging Port Replacement
Step 1: Safety First β Disable High Voltage
- Put the car in Park
- Go to Controls > Safety > Power Off β wait for the car to fully shut down
- Do NOT open the doors β this wakes the car up
- Wait 5 minutes for HV capacitors to discharge
- For extra safety, disconnect the 12V battery (under the rear seat in Model 3, under the hood in Model Y)
Step 2: Remove the Tail Light (Driver's Side)
The charge port is accessed through the left rear quarter panel:
- Open the trunk
- Remove the trunk side trim panel on the driver's (left) side
- Disconnect and remove the tail light assembly (see our tail light replacement guide for details)
- This gives you access to the charge port area
Step 3: Remove the Charge Port Door Assembly
- Disconnect the charge port door actuator electrical connector
- Remove the charge port door assembly (2 screws, T30 Torx)
- Set aside β you can reuse this unless it's also damaged
Step 4: Disconnect the Charging Port
- Locate the main electrical connector β this is the large multi-pin connector that carries both signal and power
- Release the connector lock and carefully disconnect
- Disconnect the charge port ECU connector (smaller connector)
- If applicable, disconnect the manual release cable from the port assembly
- Remove the drain tube from the charge port housing
Step 5: Remove the Charge Port Assembly
- Remove the mounting bolts securing the charge port carrier to the body (typically 3β4 bolts, 10mm)
- Carefully slide the assembly out through the body opening
- Note the routing of cables and the drain tube
Step 6: Install the New Assembly
- Route the drain tube through the body first
- Slide the new charge port assembly into position
- Install mounting bolts hand-tight
- Verify alignment β the charge port should be flush with the body panel and centered in the opening
- Torque mounting bolts to 5 Nm (4 ft-lbs)
- Reconnect all electrical connectors:
- Main power/signal connector (click until fully seated)
- Charge port ECU connector
- Manual release cable
- Reconnect the drain tube
Step 7: Reinstall Components
- Reinstall the charge port door assembly
- Reinstall the tail light
- Reinstall the trunk trim panel
- Reconnect the 12V battery
Step 8: Test
- Turn on the vehicle
- Open the charge port door via touchscreen or button
- Plug in your home charger β verify it connects and begins charging
- Check for any error messages
- Test the charge port latch (plug in and unplatch via screen)
- Verify the manual release cable works (pull the release in the trunk)
Troubleshooting After Replacement
| Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
| "Unable to charge" error persists | Check all connectors are fully seated |
| Charge port door won't open | Verify door actuator connector |
| Slow charging | May need software update or separate issue |
| Error codes on screen | Reboot (both scroll wheels for 10s) |
